Dame Rosie Winterton DBE, MP for Doncaster Central, recently attended the Celebrating Public Health Excellence 2016 event in Parliament, where her constituent Anne Evans, from received an Excellence in public health and wellbeing 2016 award, presented to her by Jane Ellison MP, Minister for Public Health.

These awards celebrate the achievements of people who are tackling health challenges and, like Anne, have made an outstanding contribution to their local communities.

Rosie said:
I am delighted that Anne has received the recognition that she thoroughly deserves, for her work to raise awareness of problem gambling, not only here in Doncaster but also in Parliament, and I was pleased to be able to nominate her for this award.”

Ambassador Award

Anne Evans has campaigned to safeguard people from problem gambling since her son took his own life at the age of 40, following a gambling addiction. Anne gained the support of Doncaster’s Director of Public Health. Working with the Health and Wellbeing Board, she won the backing of Doncaster GPs and chemists to put up posters and leaflets which raise awareness of the issues around problem gambling. Publicity material has been displayed in 50 GP practices and 75 chemists in Doncaster.

Anne has taken her campaign to promote responsible gambling to Westminster, meeting MPs and gambling industry representatives to discuss measures to tackle problem gambling.

Anne is also an ambassador for the Young Gamblers Education Trust, a charity that aims to safeguard young people from problem gambling. She has helped to arrange educational workshops for teachers that aim to increase knowledge and understanding of gambling and gambling related harm and provide resources for work with students and young people.
