Genting Casinos, People 1st and YGAM Innovation have agreed to work together to incorporate what is a termed a trailblazer group and develop a new employer-led apprenticeship standard and end-point assessment for the gambling sector.

With the recent introduction of the apprenticeship levy there is a unique opportunity and willingness from the sector to collaborate and develop an apprenticeship standard specifically for those who have an interest of working within the UK’s responsible and regulated gambling sector. Such collaboration is a priority action within the UK’s Responsible Gambling Strategy Board (RSGB) National Responsible Gambling Strategy: Priority Action Six: Piloting Innovations.

Genting Casinos and YGAM Innovation will lead this project and bring together a trailblazer group made up of cross industry partners. The trailblazers group will then work with People 1st who have developed the apprenticeship standards for the visitor economy sector for England, including hospitality and retail to understand if any approved standards could apply to the gambling sector, or if a new standard needs to be developed. Genting Casinos, YGAM Innovation, trailblazer group members and delivery partners would then collaborate to launch the new standard, making full use of the apprenticeship levy to deliver a high-quality programme of learning for which the delivery partners would be subject to Ofsted inspections.

Julie Davies, Director of Human Resources from Genting said ‘Genting Casinos who operate 40 Casinos and employ over 4,500 people in the UK and I have always wanted to bring apprentices in to our business to develop them as our potential future leaders. We are proud to be working in many communities across the United Kingdom; providing local jobs for local people and we know there is a lot of untapped talent who may be interested in joining the gambling sector through an apprenticeship route. As keen supporters of YGAM, we are delighted to be working with their talented team to drive this project in an impactful and authentic manner.

Lee Willows, Chair of YGAM Innovation said ‘YGAM Innovation is the trading subsidiary of the highly impactful, UK-Registered Charity Young Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM). Given our reputation of working collaboratively within different regulated environments and delivering high quality education for teaching practitioners across the UK, we are delighted to be leading this project with Genting Casinos. As a starting point, we have commenced the process to recruit a self-employed, hands-on consultant to drive and take ownership of this project, the details of which are on both the YGAM, YGAM Innovation and Genting Careers websites. I am very much looking forward to working with colleagues to deliver a hugely relevant, cost effective and authentic apprenticeship standard and to working with colleagues from Ofsted to put the quality of learning and impact front and centre.

Linzi Johnston, Head of Client Relationships from People 1st said ‘The Chair of YGAM Innovation reached out to me in 2017 and I was impressed with the vision, enthusiasm and experience he has for quality apprenticeships. Since that meeting we have been speaking to many operators about coming together to deliver something impactful for the gambling sector and we are thrilled at the prospect of helping all stakeholders to understand the landscape and to help them maximise their apprenticeship levy.
